Common questions

How do I play? Tap Start game, then Start round. Things fall from the top with a price on each. Move your cart with the left and right arrow keys, or drag anywhere on the play area with a finger or the mouse. Catch five things to clear the round. There are three rounds, each with less money and less time.

Why did the game end suddenly? You caught something that cost more than the money you had left, which ends the game ("Over budget"). The game also ends if the clock runs out before your cart is full.

How is my score worked out? Each round scores 500, plus the points of what you caught (half its price), plus 2 points for every dollar left and 30 for every second left. Bonuses then multiply it: Perfect Budget (spend exactly all your money) x2.0, Specialist (4 or more from one aisle) x1.5, Thrifty (keep half your budget or more) x1.4, Speed Demon (15 seconds or more left) x1.3 and Balanced Cart (3 or more aisles) x1.2. Your final score is the rounds added together.

What are the round bubbles and tilted squares? Power-ups. Round green bubbles help (slower falling, more money, a paused clock, double points, stars on good buys). Tilted red squares hurt (less money, faster falling, a locked slot, fewer points). The title screen lists all nine.

My score didn't save. The message under the name box says why: the name had something other than letters, numbers and single spaces, dots, dashes or underscores; the name wasn't allowed; you saved a score less than 10 seconds ago; or you've saved 30 today. If it says it couldn't reach the server, check your connection and try again. The game itself always works, even when the leaderboard can't be reached.

Can I change or delete my score? Not from the game. Send us the name and roughly when you saved it through our contact page, and we'll remove it.

Can I play on my phone? Yes. Hold your phone upright and drag on the play area to move the cart.

Dark mode? Thrifty follows your device's setting. The moon or sun button at the top of the title screen switches it.
