ChessAI Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2 October 2026
ChessAI is made by Kitchen Labs. It's a chess website: you play a Stockfish bot that adjusts to your level, analyse positions, set up boards and scan a photo of a board. This page says, in plain English, what happens to your information.
The short version
- The chess engine runs in your browser. Your moves, games and analysis are never sent to us.
- Your finished games are saved only in your browser.
- If you use Scan a board, the picture is shrunk on your device and sent to our server and an AI service to read the position. We don't keep it.
- There are no accounts, no ads and no tracking.
What we handle, and why
Playing and analysing. Stockfish, the chess engine, is downloaded to your browser and runs there. Every move you play, every grade, the bot's level and every analysed position stay on your device. Copying a FEN puts it on your own clipboard only.
Scanning a board (only when you use it). When you choose a picture and tap Read the board, your browser first shrinks it (longest side 1024 pixels, as a JPEG). It then sends that picture, over an encrypted connection, to Kitchen Labs' server (hosted by Vercel). Our server passes it to a third-party AI service, which reads the pieces, and the position comes back to your browser, where you check it. Kitchen Labs does not store the picture. Our AI provider does not use it to train its models, and may keep it for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring.
Please scan only pictures of chess boards. Don't include people, documents or anything personal in the photo.
Scan limits. To keep scanning free and fair, our server counts scans per IP address (about 4 a minute and 30 a day). The count is held only in the server's memory. It is never written to a database, and it's dropped when the server restarts or needs the room.
Hosting logs. Like any website, our host (Vercel) keeps standard request logs for a limited time, such as your IP address, the page asked for and the time. Our server also logs, for each scan, how much AI it used (numbers only). If a scan fails, the log keeps the error, and sometimes the position the AI read, so we can fix it. It never keeps the picture. We use these logs only to keep the site running.
What stays in your browser
- Your finished games (date, result, number of moves, accuracy, rough rating, your colour and the bot's final level) are kept in your browser's local storage under
chessai_elo_history. Only the newest 50 are kept. The last one is how the next game can start "where you left off". - Light or dark mode, if you pick one with the theme button, is kept in local storage under
theme.
Nothing else is saved, and none of it is sent to us.
To delete it, clear this site's data in your browser (in most browsers: Settings → Privacy → Cookies and site data, then find chess-ai-six.vercel.app). A private window saves nothing once it's closed.
What we don't do
No accounts, no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics, no cookies used for tracking, no tracking across websites, and no selling or sharing of data. We don't ask for your name, email, location or contacts.
Children
ChessAI is not directed at children under 13 and collects no personal information from them.
