Common questions

How does the bot's level work? The bot plays at a level from 1 to 20. After each of your moves, Stockfish checks how much that move changed your chances of winning and grades it. A best move pushes the level up by 0.5. A good move leaves it where it is. An inaccuracy, a mistake or a blunder pulls it down by 0.3, 0.8 or 1.5. Moves that are the only legal move don't count. When you're already lost, the level doesn't go up, so a lost game can't make the bot harder.

What do the grades mean? They're based on how many points your chance of winning dropped. The engine's top move, or anything within 2 points of it, is best. Less than 10 points is good, 10 or more is an inaccuracy, 20 or more a mistake, and 30 or more a blunder.

What is the "rough rating"? A guess at your playing strength, based on the level the bot played at and your accuracy in that game. It's a rough guide, not an official rating.

Can I pick up where I left off? Yes. After a finished game, the next game starts at the level the bot finished at. Your last 50 finished games are saved in this browser only, so they don't move to another browser or device.

Why did a scan misread a square? The scan reads the picture with AI, and it can get squares wrong, especially with real photos at an angle, pieces hiding each other, carved or unusual sets, glare or blur. That's why every scan opens in the editor with how sure it was. Check it against your picture and fix any square: drag pieces, or pick one from the trays and tap a square. For the best results, take the photo from straight above, with the whole board in the frame and good light. If the photo was taken from Black's side, tap Turn pieces. A picture doesn't show whose turn it is, so set Who moves next? yourself.

Why can't I scan right now? To keep scanning free, each visitor can scan about 4 boards a minute and 30 a day. If you hit the limit, wait a little or try again tomorrow. You can always set up the board by hand on Set up.

What is a FEN? A FEN is a chess position written as one line of text. Chess sites and books use it to share positions. Paste one into the FEN box on Set up, or on the FEN page (chess-ai-six.vercel.app/fen), and ChessAI tells you in plain words if anything is wrong with it, then lets you analyse it. On the analysis page, the copy button gives you the FEN of the position on the board.

Does it work offline, or on my phone? It works in any modern browser, including on phones. The engine runs on your device, so a game or an analysis that has already started keeps going without a connection. Loading pages and scanning need one.

How do I delete my saved games? Clear this site's data in your browser settings (look for chess-ai-six.vercel.app). There's no account, so there's nothing else to delete.
