Doppel Privacy Policy
Last updated: 9 October 2026
Doppel is made by Kitchen Labs. It's a Discord bot that learns how the people in a server write, so members can chat with an AI imitation of each other. This page says, in plain English, what it reads, what it keeps, who else is involved, and how to remove it.
The short version
- Doppel reads a server's message history only after someone with the Manage Server permission sees what it will do and presses Start learning.
- It keeps up to 120 messages from each member (300 characters each at most), and the style notes it writes from them, so it can imitate how they write.
- Messages, style notes and conversations are processed by a third-party AI service to write the imitation's replies.
- Any member can run
/forgetmeto delete what Doppel kept about them and be left out of future learning./resetdeletes everything for a server. - No ads, no analytics, no tracking, and nothing is sold.
What Doppel reads
Message history, once an admin starts it. When Doppel is added to a server, it posts a setup card explaining what it will do. Nothing is read until someone with the Manage Server permission presses Start learning (on that card, or after running /setup). Doppel then reads up to 40,000 of the most recent messages from the text channels it has permission to see, a page at a time, over a few minutes. It doesn't read messages in the background after that: it only learns again when an admin starts learning again.
Commands and forms. When someone uses a Doppel command, presses its buttons or fills in its text box, Discord sends Doppel that person's Discord id, server nickname, display name and avatar, the server's id, and what they typed.
What Doppel keeps
On our database (hosted by Supabase), for each server:
- Message samples: for each member, up to 120 of their recent messages (cut to 300 characters), with each message's id and time. Mentions are turned into names (like "@Sam") and messages that are only links aren't kept. Messages from bots aren't kept.
- Style notes: when someone first talks to a member's Doppel, the AI service writes a short description of how that member writes (tone, message length, punctuation, slang, phrases they repeat, topics) from their samples. Doppel keeps it with 40 of their sample lines.
- Conversations: what people say to a Doppel and its replies, with the speaker's id and display name. A conversation nobody has used for 7 days is deleted.
- Learning progress: which channels have been read, how many messages, who started it, and where the progress card is.
- The forget list: the ids of members who ran
/forgetme, so later learning leaves them out. - Daily counts of replies and style notes per server, to keep usage within limits.
How the AI service is used
To build a member's style notes, Doppel sends their message samples to a third-party AI service. To write each reply, it sends the style notes, 40 sample lines, the recent conversation and the new message. The AI service processes this to produce an answer and doesn't use it to train its models. Replies are labelled in Discord as an AI imitation, not the real person. Doppel is told not to invent private details, write slurs or harassment, or pretend to be the real person when sincerely asked.
Your choices
- Leave yourself out: run
/forgetmein the server. Doppel deletes your message samples, your style notes, conversations with your Doppel, and what you said in Doppel conversations there, and leaves you out of future learning./learnmeundoes it for the next time learning runs. - Delete everything for a server: someone with Manage Server can run
/reset. It deletes the server's samples, style notes, conversations and learning progress. It keeps the forget list, so people who opted out stay out if learning runs again. - Remove the bot: run
/reset, then remove Doppel in Server Settings → Integrations. If it was removed without/reset, ask us through our contact page with your server's name and we'll delete its data.
By default only people with the Manage Server permission can run /setup and /reset; server admins can change that in Server Settings → Integrations → Doppel.
Who else is involved
- Discord delivers commands to Doppel and holds your messages; its own privacy policy applies.
- A third-party AI service writes the style notes and replies, as described above.
- Vercel hosts Doppel and this website. Like any host it keeps short-lived request logs (such as the time, the address requested and an IP address). Doppel's own error logs never include message text.
- Supabase hosts the database described above.
We don't sell or share data with anyone else.
The website
The Doppel website, including its demo, runs in your browser with made-up people and replies written in advance; it doesn't use the AI service. It has no accounts, no analytics and no tracking cookies. If you choose light or dark mode, your browser remembers that choice locally.
Children
Doppel follows Discord's age rules and isn't directed at children under 13.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above. Questions? Send them through our contact page.
