SmartMenu Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2 October 2026

SmartMenu is made by Kitchen Labs. It reads restaurant menus from your photos and explains the dishes. This page says, in plain English, what happens to your information.

The short version

  • Your menu photos are sent to our server and a third-party AI service to be read, then thrown away.
  • Your diet, allergies, home currency and saved menus stay on your phone.
  • There are no accounts, no ads and no tracking.

What we handle, and why

Menu photos. When you tap "Read menu", the photos you chose are shrunk and sent over an encrypted connection to Kitchen Labs' server (hosted by Supabase), which passes them to a third-party AI service to read the dishes. The result comes back to your phone. Kitchen Labs does not store your photos; they exist only for the length of that request. The AI service processes them under its API terms, which say API data isn't used to train its models and may be kept for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring. Nothing else is sent with the photos: not your diet, allergies, name, email or location.

Dish names. When you open a dish, its name is sent to our server to look up a freely licensed photo on Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia sees our server's request, not you. The photo itself then loads from Wikimedia's servers.

An anonymous session. To keep the free service fair, the app signs in invisibly with a random ID that isn't linked to your name, email or device identifiers. Our server counts how many menus that ID scans each day (for example "3 scans today") so it can apply the daily limit. The count is all we keep.

Exchange rates. The app downloads daily currency rates from open.er-api.com (ExchangeRate-API). That request contains nothing about you.

What stays on your phone

Your diet choices, allergies, spice preference, home currency, and every saved menu (with a small thumbnail of the first page) are stored only on your device. Deleting the app deletes them. You can also delete all saved menus in You → Delete all saved menus.

What we don't do

No advertising, no analytics SDKs, no tracking across apps or websites, no selling or sharing of data. We don't ask for your name, email, location or contacts.

Allergens

SmartMenu uses AI to read menus and describe common recipes. It can be wrong and it doesn't know how a particular kitchen cooks. Always confirm allergens with the restaurant.

Children

SmartMenu is not directed at children under 13 and collects no personal information from them.
