Common questions
How do I play? Tap chips to build your bet ($5 to $500), then tap Deal. Get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. On your turn, choose Hit (take a card), Stand (keep your hand), Double (double your bet for exactly one more card), Split (turn a pair into two hands) or Surrender (give up the hand for half your bet back, where the rules allow it). Tap How to play (the question mark) for the full rules. On a computer you can also press H, S, D, P and R, and Enter to deal.
What does each result pay? A win pays 1 to 1: you get your bet back plus the same again. A blackjack (an ace and a 10-value card as your first two cards) pays 3 to 2, or 6 to 5 on the 6-to-5 table. A tie ("push") gives your bet back. Insurance pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack.
What is the "best play" ring? It marks the move basic strategy recommends for your hand against the dealer's card: the mathematically best play for the rules at your table. The reason is written above the buttons. Turn it off in the Table menu with Show the best play. If you play differently, a short tip appears when the round ends.
Should I take insurance? Almost never. It's a side bet that the dealer has blackjack, and it loses money over time unless you're counting cards. The game says so when it's offered.
Who are the other players? Computer players. They play every hand by basic strategy and never take insurance. Choose 2 to 7 players (including you) in the Table menu, between hands.
What are the different rules? The Table menu has seven rule sets, from the classic six-deck shoe to single deck, European (no dealer peek) and a 6-to-5 table, each with its house edge: how much the house keeps over time even when you play perfectly.
Is the deal fair? Yes. The cards are real decks shuffled in your browser by a random number generator seeded from your browser's secure random source. The shoe is reshuffled once three quarters of it has been dealt. The computer players' bets use a separate random stream, so they can't change the cards you get. The game's rules and payouts are ported from our mobile app Blackjack Pro and tested against published strategy and house-edge tables.
I ran out of chips. How do I get more? Tap Start over with $1,000 (it appears when you're out), or find it in the Table menu. It's free and it's pretend: there's nothing to buy.
Where are my chips saved? Can I play on another device? Only in this browser on this device. There are no accounts, so your balance doesn't move between devices, and clearing your browser's data for this site resets it.
No sound? Tap the speaker button at the top (on a phone it's in the Table menu), and check your device isn't muted. Browsers only allow sound after you've tapped the page once.
Want to get better at it? Our mobile app Blackjack Pro grades every play, drills the strategy chart and teaches card counting.
Playing for real? This game uses pretend chips only. If gambling stops being fun, call the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537).
